Did recent data scandals have an effect on the popularity of social networks among the top 1,000 online stores in Germany?
For years, Facebook has been the most popular social network among the 1,000 leading online stores in Germany. But due to the recent data scandals, some of the top-selling online shops have turned their backs on the industry leader for the first time in years. While in 2017, 95.1 percent of the top 1,000 were still active on Facebook, the share fell to 91.6 percent in 2018. On the other hand, Instagram has grown significantly from 64.0 percent in 2017 to 70.4 percent in 2018.
YouTube (from 80.0% down to 79.0%), Twitter (from 76.6% down to 74.4%) and Pinterest (from 55.3% down to 54.7%) are not facing any significant changes. The future development of Google+ is interesting. After its decrease from 83.8 percent in 2017 to 69.5 percent in 2018, recent data scandals will most likely lead to a complete shut-down of Google’s social network.
