Top 10 Food and Personal Care online stores

JD.com leads in the category with net sales of almost US$15 billion in 2019

The corona crisis has hit hard on retail. People have lost their mood to spend, the overall economic insecurity intimidates consumers. But they still need to fulfill their basic needs – eating and personal hygiene. Curfews and contact bans might turn out as an unprecedented opportunity for online food retailers. We cannot yet analyze the actual effects of COVID-19 on the industry, but we can have a look on how online food retailers did in 2019 and check out the ranking of the top 10 online stores in the category Food and Personal Care by the ecommerceDB.com:

The biggest online store in the category Food and Personal Care in 2019 comes from China: JD.com registered net sales of US$14.8 billion from food, beverages, cosmetics, drugs and other personal care products in 2019. With a lead of more than US$10 billion, the Chinese generalist leaves second-placed amazon.com far behind. The U.S. eCommerce giant recorded 2019 Food and Personal Care net sales of US$ 4.6 billion. The two generalists have one thing in common: Food and Personal Care makes up only a fraction of their overall revenue: JD.com generates 80% of their sales in other categories and amazon.com owes only just above 5% of their total sales to the Food and Personal Care category. Quite a merit that they have still put themselves at the forefront in this comparison and a hint towards their general weight in international eCommerce!

In third place, around US$ 800 million behind amazon.com, a food specialist comes in: The UK’s tesco.com generates 80% of their revenue in the Food and Personal Care category, which amounted to US$ 3.8 billion in 2019. Growth-wise, however, tesco.com is by far not as strong as the top 2. JD.com is not only the leader in terms of the amount of net sales, but also growth champion, with an overall cross-category increase of 20.3% from 2018 to 2019. The ranking is dominated by stores from the U.S., China, and the UK. The best ranked German stores in the category are amazon.de in 19th place and hellofresh.de in 23rd place.
