The mother of Europe’s online pharmacies

The Zur Rose Group owns several European eCommerce pharmacy brands – with net sales of over €1 billion

What started off as a wholesaler of pharmacy products to dispensing doctors in East Switzerland at the beginning of the 1990s has grown into Europe’s number one player in the field of eCommerce pharmacies. Following numerous acquisitions – among them internationally renowned brands like the leading online pharmacy brands in Germany DocMorris or medpex, but also marketplaces for consumer health and beauty products – the Swiss Zur Rose Group has grown into one of the leaders in the online pharmacy market in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as other parts of Europe. The company claims to employ more than 1,800 people across Europe and serve more than 7 million active customers.

ecommerceDB.com lists 8 URLs run by Zur Rose Group – all of them increased their online net sales between 2018 and 2019:

docmorris.de generates net sales of almost € half a billion in 2019
In October 2012, Zur Rose acquired the Dutch brand DocMorris, Europe’s largest online and mail-order pharmacy at the time, which predominantly delivers to customers in Germany. docmorris.de is still the group’s top-selling URL today: In 2019, net sales of €478.1 million were generated via docmorris.de. With a year-on-year net sales increase of 21%, the online store is also Zur Rose’s growth champion. Second-placed medpex.de – which has been part of the Zur Rose Group since January 2019 – also grew by a substantial 17% between 2018 and 2019, generating 2019 online net sales of €192.6 million. zurrose.ch and apo-rot.de registered modest year-on-year growth rates of 2% and 3% respectively, but still produced solid net sales amounts of €117.1 million and €105.0 million in 2019, respectively.

The Zur Rose Group is currently planning to take over another of Germany’s eCommerce and mail-order pharmacies: With the acquisition of Apotal – which is currently Germany’s fifth biggest online pharmacy – Zur Rose plans to add another 1.1 million consumers to its customer base and extend its lead over the number two in the eCommerce pharmacy field in Europe and its only serious competitor Shop Apotheke Europe.
