The top 5 German online pharmacies
docmorris.de and shop-apotheke.com are the market leaders in the German online pharmacy business
Ordering medication online has been a trend for several years, which has experienced yet another boost in the past months as more people than ever avoided a personal visit to the local drugstore in favor of a stay-at-home mentality and social distancing. Online pharmacies are definitely among the profiteers of the corona crisis. Shop Apotheke Europe – founded in Germany as one of the first online pharmacies and to date among the biggest players in the field in Europe – has recently raised their revenue expectations for fiscal 2020 thanks to yet another highly positive quarter – year-on-year growth was even higher than in Q1. ecommerceDB.com figures show that their main URL shop-apotheke.com had already done very well before the corona crisis – net sales of the German online store increased by more than 50% year-on-year in 2019. In a comparison of the top 5 online pharmacies by 2019 net sales in Germany, shop-apotheke.com comes in second, but is close on the heels of leading docmorris.de:
docmorris.de is the leading online pharmacy in Germany and also the top-selling URL of the Swiss eCommerce pharmacy giant Zur Rose Group, which has repeatedly made headlines in the past years following several acquisitions of competing brands. docmorris.de generated net sales of €446.0 million in 2019. It is quite closely followed by shop-apotheke.com with 2019 net sales of €405.3 million. shop-apotheke.com beats docmorris.de in terms of growth, however: The online store increased its net sales by more than 50% between 2018 and 2019, while Zur Rose’s leading store grew by “only” 18% in the same period. Rank 3 is taken by another Zur Rose player: medpex.de – which was acquired in early 2019 – generated net sales of €188.6 million in Germany in 2019, following a year-on-year growth of 15%. Fourth-placed medikamente-per-klick.de is an online store run by the German pharmacist Karlheinz Ilius. It generated net sales of €167.7 million in Germany and grew by a substantial 20% between 2018 and 2019. The fifth-biggest eCommerce pharmacy by net sales in Germany is apotal.de, which was launched in 2004. apotal.de is the only store among the top 5 that recorded negative year-on-year growth: Net sales decreased from €148.0 million in 2018 to €104.0 million in 2019 – which corresponds to a growth of -29.7%.
