Mobile devices play an ever greater role in online shopping. As internet and mobile penetration rates are constantly rising around the globe and consumers worldwide pay more and more attention to a seamless shopping experience and a user-friendly access to their favorite shops on all their devices, retailers need to adapt. In countries with a very high mobile penetration, like Japan, the UK or the Netherlands, mobile transactions made up more than half of all eCommerce transactions in 2018, according to Criteo – and mobile penetration is growing in most countries. Convenient shopping apps for mobile devices have thus become a key to success in the online shopping business. Today, ecommerceDB.com presents to you the most popular eCommerce apps that were downloaded from the Google Play Store to Android devices in September 2020:

The most frequently downloaded eCommerce app on Android phones was the international fashion brand SHEIN, with a total number of 6.3 million downloads in September 2020. Rank two is taken by Indian online retailer Flipkart. The app of the all-round marketplace offering products from a variety of categories was downloaded 5.6 million times in September 2020. Wish – which was the most highly valuated unicorn from the eCommerce field this year– comes in third, with a total number of 4.8 million worldwide downloads in September. Amazon Shopping, the international app of the world’s number one online retailer by net sales, only makes 4th place, with 4.3 million downloads in total. Amazon has another app in the ranking, though, namely the Indian version of Amazon Shopping, which was designed only for the Indian market. It was downloaded 3.7 million times in September 2020 and therefore ranks 6th among the most popular Android shopping apps worldwide. Mercado Libre ranks in between. Lazada and AliExpress – two brands originally from China – make ranks 7 and 8. Lidl Plus – the app of the German discount store brand Lidl – is in 9th place. Shopee: Compre e Venda online – the Brazilian version of the Singaporean eCommerce brand Shopee, concludes the top 10 ranking, with a total number of 2.1 million downloads.

Note: Most shopping apps in the ranking are marketplaces and therefore excluded from the ecommerceDB.com net sales analyses. In case of hybrid business models, ecommerceDB.com covers first-party net sales only.
