Amazon dominates 3 U.S. eCommerce categories

In Electronics & Media, produces 2.5 times the net sales amount of second-placed

With a total market volume of US$905 billion, the United States was the second largest eCommerce market in the world in 2022, according to the Statista Digital Market Outlook. It was beaten only by China, but ranked way ahead of third-placed Japan, which produced only around 20% of the U.S. 2022 eCommerce revenue. During the corona pandemic, between the years 2019 and 2021, the U.S. eCommerce market grew by more than 56%. On a top store level, growth was even higher. The biggest 500 online stores by total net sales in the U.S. registered a cumulated net sales growth of 73% between 2019 and 2021, producing a total of US$558 billion in 2021. The top 500 U.S. online stores are clearly led by, which registered total U.S. net sales of US$126.8 billion in 2021. Does Amazon dominate in all eCommerce segments? Amazon dominates the leading 3 U.S. eCommerce categories

The two biggest product categories in the U.S. eCommerce market are Electronics & Media and Toys, Hobby & DIY. Not surprisingly, is not only ahead in both categories, it also leads by a substantial margin. As Electronics & Media is’s main product category (>50% of net sales), its lead is especially pronounced in this category. With 2021 Electronics & Media net sales of US$69 billion in the U.S., produced more than 2.5 times the amount of second-placed, with US$26 billion., for its part, has a clear lead over in rank 3. The situation is similar in the Toys, Hobby & DIY category: With net sales of US$28 billion from online sales of Toys, Hobby & DIY products in the U.S., also dominates this category in 2021. Ranks 2 and 3, and, cannot compete. The other three product categories in this comparison show a different picture: While is also in the top spot in Furniture & Appliances, its lead is a lot less pronounced.
