Magento leading shop software in EMEA region

33% of online stores in Europe, the Middle East and Africa which are based on a shop software use Magento

When selling their goods online, many companies rely on proprietary or individually programmed websites which are tailored to their specific needs or brand characteristics. But there is also an easier, more convenient and probably also cheaper way for merchants to build their online stores: The use of an eCommerce platform or shop software, which offers all the necessary features of an online store from a single source: product or category databases, search functions, payment or logistic provider interfaces, a customizable presentation system, and more. Big international players like puma.com or sephora.com1 rely on eCommerce platforms provided by third-party shop software providers. In their Enterprise eCommerce Leader Report 2023 EMEA, Storyblok analyzed more than 3,500 online stores headquartered in the EMEA region with at least 100 employees and revenues above US$10 million to find out about their website performances and shop software usage. The results reveal a clear leader among shop software providers:

Magento leading shop software in EMEA region

According to the Storyblok analysis, 33% of eCommerce companies selling online via a shop software website in Europe, the Middle East and Africa use the open-source solution Magento. This corresponds to a total 375 stores. Magento Commerce was acquired by Adobe a few years ago and was rebranded Adobe Commerce in 2021. The Magento platform is the clear leader in this comparison of shop software providers by the number of total online stores in the EMEA region using the service. It leads by almost 15 percentage points over second-placed Salesforce Commerce Cloud, which is used by around 18% of online stores in the region. The above-mentioned puma.com and sephora.com run on Salesforce Commerce Cloud platforms. The Canadian platform Shopify is used by 11% of online stores in the EMEA region according to Storyblok – which makes Shopify the third most popular shop software in this comparison. It is notable that most eCommerce platforms used in Europe, the Middle East and Africa were developed by U.S. tech companies like Salesforce (Salesforce Commerce Cloud), WordPress (WooCommerce), or IBM (HCL Commerce). With PrestaShop (France) and SAP Commerce Cloud (Germany), there are only two European providers.
