UK top 10 – the biggest online stores in 2019

amazon.co.uk leads with 2019 net sales of almost US$10 billion, followed by tesco.com

With a projected eCommerce market volume of almost US$97 billion in 2020, the UK is currently the biggest eCommerce market in Europe and the fourth biggest in the world, according to the Statista Digital Market Outlook. In terms of eCommerce penetration, the UK fares just as good – it is one of the countries where eCommerce penetration is among the highest in international comparison. Thus, it is not surprising that the 10 biggest online stores in the UK are all heavy players, generating substantial net sales amounts in the billions. This is the current UK top 10 ranking of the biggest online stores by net sales.

UK top online stores revenue

It comes as no surprise that the usual suspect when talking about eCommerce top performances is in first place: amazon.co.uk generated net sales of US$9.8 billion in 2019, clearly securing the pole position in the current top 10 ranking of the biggest online stores by net sales in the UK. At quite a distance, tesco.com follows in second place, with 2019 net sales of US$4.8 billion. Third-placed argos.co.uk generated net sales of US$3.1 billion. The top 3 are still the same as in the 2018 ranking. Rank 4, however, is taken by a different player than in 2018: very.co.uk was able to increase revenues by 7% year-on-year and moved up two ranks. The eCommerce generalist produced net sales of US$2.1 billion in 2019. johnlewis.com and next.co.uk moved down one rank each, now coming in 5th and 6th, respectively. Places 7 to 9 haven’t changed compared to the 2018 ranking, they are still taken by ocado.com, sainsbury.co.uk, and asda.com. Rank number 10 – asos.com – is new to the top 10. The fashion and cosmetics online retailer generated net sales of US$1.2 billion in 2019. apple.com, which took 10th place in the 2018 ranking, has lost ground, currently ranking 13th in the UK comparison of the biggest online stores by net sales.
