eWallets in the U.S. eCommerce
November 19, 2019
eWallets have become an indispensable part of today’s eCommerce landscape. Among the 1,000 leading online stores in the U.S., ranked by revenue generated in 2018, 77% of the stores offer payment via an eWallet payment provider.
The most popular provider among the ranking is PayPal. 97% of the online stores that offer payment via an eWallet payment provider trust in the company founded in 1998.
Amazon Pay (11%) ranks second, followed by Apple Pay (8%), Visa Checkout (4%) and Masterpass (3%), a digital wallet offered by Mastercard.
PayPal’s plan worked out. Focusing exclusively on a digital payment method at an early stage, PayPal was rewarded with having a clear market dominance. Other providers, especially well-known credit card providers, are clearly lagging behind. And some are already stepping back such as Masterpass who recently announced to withdraw from the German market.
