Amazon has a high opinion of its shopping events. The eCommerce giant claims that the "Big Deal Days" event broke new records. Is it really true? And what role does AI play in all of this?
Article by Patrick Nowak | October 11, 2024Big Deal Days: Amazon Claims Big Success – Key Insights:
Big Succes for Amazon: Prime members "saved" over US$1 billion on millions of deals, including gifts and seasonal items.
Record Sales: Reportedly independent sellers also experienced record sales.
Amazon AI: AI tools like Rufus and Amazon Lens are enhancing product research.
Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days was a huge success, marking its best October shopping event yet – at least that's what Amazon officially claims. Data regarding that statement is still missing. But we can confidently say that Amazon likely made a profit from this event, as more Prime members participated and took advantage of early holiday discounts.
“Our 2024 Prime Big Deal Days event marked a strong start to the holiday shopping season, with record-breaking sales and participation from Prime members worldwide”, Worldwide Amazon Stores CEO Doug Herrington said in a statement.
The exact revenue generated can't be determined since Amazon hasn't released specific numbers, except that Prime members "saved" over US$1 billion on millions of deals. So, it must be significantly more than US$1 billion.
What we do know for sure is that amazon.com is the leading shopping site in the United States, with US$135.3 billion in sales in 2023.
Amazon Record-Breaking Sales
Reportedly independent sellers also thrived, achieving good sales compared to last year. Well-known brands like Dyson, Mattel, Levi’s, and Apple offered special deals. Some top-selling items included:
Trendy skincare products from Laneige and Innisfree
Gadgets like Apple AirPods and smartwatches
Kids’ toys from Lego, Barbie, Fisher-Price, and Nerf
Home essentials like carpet cleaners and vacuums
Amazon AI: More Prime Subscriptions
In the three weeks leading up to Big Deal Days, a record number of customers signed up for Prime membership. Prime members benefited from features like Amazon’s AI shopping assistant, Rufus, and the visual shopping tool, Amazon Lens. These 'new eCommerce' or 'next-gen eCommerce' trends could further strengthen Amazon's dominance. But how does is work?

Amazon's use of AI enhances the shopping journey by streamlining product research and personalizing recommendations. The introduction of AI Shopping Guides simplifies the often time-consuming process of understanding unfamiliar products. For example, when purchasing items like TVs or running shoes, consumers can quickly access key information, features, and customer insights tailored to their needs.
Additionally, innovations such as personalized size recommendations and review highlights in Amazon Fashion help shoppers find the right fit with greater confidence. By consolidating essential details and offering relevant product suggestions, Amazon's AI tools reduce the guesswork, making informed decisions more accessible.
