With net sales of US$5.9 billion in 2020, the online store of the UK-founded and based supermarket chain is in first place in the top 10 global online supermarkets ranking, clearly leading over second-placed kroger.com. The eCommerce net sales of the U.S. supermarket chain amounted to US$4.1 billion in 2020. Another UK player follows in third place: sainsbury.co.uk generated US$3.6 billion in 2020. Sainsbury’s online store also registered the highest growth in US$ terms2 among the top 10 – it grew by an amazing 81% compared to 2019. But French store auchan.fr follows closely behind in terms of growth. auchan.fr grew by 80% year-on-year and registered total 2020 eCommerce net sales of US$2.8 billion, which saves rank 4 for the French supermarket chain. It strikes the eye that the ranking is dominated by UK players. Together with asda.com in rank 6 and waitrose.com in rank 9, a total of five UK online supermarkets make it into the ranking of the global top 10 online supermarket specialists by net sales.
