European eCommerce Markets Prefer Magento and Presto Shop

Shop software is an important topic for anyone in the eCommerce business, as the use of providers hinges on factors such as regional preference, usability, cost, and personal experience.

Between the two largest shop software providers in the world – Shopify and Magento – it has been found that a preference for Magento is widespread in Europe. But what about the number one shop software for each country? Is Magento still in the lead?

The Three Leading Providers Are Not Regionally Concentrated

Indeed, Magento is number one in Europe quite often, 14 times to be exact. Magento is the top shop software provider in countries spread all over the continent: It ranks number one in Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Romania, Greece, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Slovenia, Russia, and Macedonia.

Contrary to what the regional clustering of shop software providers would suggest, the markets where Magento ranks first are not subject to the same spatial concentration.

A wider regional distribution is also typical for the shop software providers that are number one in fewer countries, like Presta Shop in five markets and WooCommerce in four. The distribution of their top markets extends across the entire continent: PrestaShop is the number one shop software provider in France, Spain, Lithuania, Portugal and Belarus, while WooCommerce is preferred in Serbia, Croatia, Iceland and Estonia.

Otherwise Fragmented Preferences for Shop Software Providers

For less than half of the countries that are available in our European shop software data, or 13, the top-ranked shop software providers are more singular. Some of them are number one in two markets (like Shopify, Shoptet, and OpenCart), while others are the most used provider in only one market.

It is quite surprising, for instance, that Shopware is the number one shop software provider in Germany, but not in Switzerland and Austria, where Magento is the top provider. The DACH region therefore shows a divergence in shop software preference where otherwise their markets lean towards similar tastes.

Central Europe is also diverse in its shop software preferences: IdoSell is the only number one provider in Poland, T-Soft in Turkey and ShopRenter in Hungary. Salesforce leads in Luxemburg and CS Cart in Latvia. The last surprise in our chart is Cyprus, which, unlike Greece, has SCAYLE instead of Magento as number one.
