Valentine’s Day Drives eCommerce Revenues for Flowers & Gifts
Declaring your love to someone: Why not do so with the help of Flowers & Gifts eCommerce?
Article by Nadine Koutsou-Wehling | February 12, 2025Valentine’s Day is on February 14th, and whether you think this is a truly romantic holiday or just a cash grab for businesses, some product categories are destined to thrive during this time.
One such category is Flowers & Gifts. At ECDB, this includes fresh cut flowers, bouquets, gift baskets, and special occasion presents – in other words, ideal for holidays like Valentine’s Day.
February and May Are Important Months for Flowers & Gifts eCommerce
Flowers & Gifts eCommerce follows slightly different peaks and valleys than the overall eCommerce market. Two global events stand out as having a significant impact on the development of monthly eCommerce revenues for Flower & Gifts that differ from the global market.
The first one is Valentine’s Day in February: 9.2% of annual revenues in Flowers & Gifts eCommerce are generated in February, which is much different from the overall eCommerce market, where January, February and March are quieter months.
The second special occasion for Flowers & Gifts is Mother’s Day in May, which accounts for 9.4% of annual revenues. Note that Mother's Day is not celebrated in May worldwide, so other reasons may apply.
At the same time, May is a month in which overall eCommerce accelerates its pace again, after slower months at the beginning of the year. More specifically, 8.2% of yearly eCommerce revenues are generated in May.
Common Peaks During Holiday Season
The holiday season at the end of the year is a high revenue period for both eCommerce in general and the Flowers & Gifts market. Consumers are in the habit of buying all kinds of categories, either as gifts for others or for themselves, including flowers, postcards and gifts for special occasions.
The types of products that belong to the Flowers & Gifts category are suitable for events throughout the year, such as birthdays, weddings and all kinds of anniversaries, or just for decoration purposes without any special intent. But special holidays like Valentine’s Day that take place at fixed times of the year are responsible for the ups and downs of the entire market.
